Intelligence and smartness are assets which human beings have cherished throughout history. Even though its debatable whether its an inherited trait, or something which is acquired, there is no doubt that smarter people are more popular and successful. We should thus look at the list of the 10 smartest people alive today, in order to determine who the real world leaders are.
Top 10 Smartest people in the world:
10) Christopher Langan :
This amazing man is considered by many to be the smartest American alive. With an IQ ranging between 195 and 210, Langan had little formal education, but had nevertheless taught himself advanced math, physics, philosophy, Latin and Greek in high school. He worked as a doorman, developing his Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe in the meantime. He thus kicks off the list of the top 10 smartest people.
9) Judit Polgar :
The legendary Judit Polgar is considered by many to be one of the smartest women of all time. A child prodigy, she won against a grandmaster for the first time aged just 11. She has repeatedly defeated the likes of Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov, and finally became grandmaster at the age of 15, in 1991.
8) Neil deGrasse Tyson :
Well-known American astrophysicist and science educator Neil deGrasse Tyson always stood out for his brilliance. He graduated from Harvard with a bachelor’s degree in physics in 1980, and had obtained his Ph.D from Columbia in 1991. Asteroid 1994KA was renamed 13123 Tyson in his honour.
7) Manahel Thabet :
Yemeni economist and scientist Manahel Thabet became the youngest person to receive a financial engineering Ph.D magna cum laude in 2008, aged just 25. She has since worked on a second Ph.D in quantum mechanics, and has an IQ higher than 168. Definitely one deserving to feature in the list of the top 10 smartest persons!!!
6) Steven Pinker :
The Canadian visual cognition and psycholinguistics expert is currently a prof of psychology at Harvard. While at MIT, he attained the post of the university’s cognitive neuroscience center’s director. His 2002 book, the Blank Slate, became an international bestseller. He is undoubtedly one of the 10 smartest persons in the world.
5) Terence Tao :
Born in Adelaide in 1975, Tao was studying college-level math courses by his 9th birthday. He became the youngest ever International Mathematical Olympiad gold medallist aged just 13, and got his Ph.D from Princeton aged 20. He has also added the2006 Fields Medal to his list of achievements since.
4) Akshay Venkatesh :
Born in India in 1981, he won a bronze medal at the International Physics Olympiad in 1993, aged just 11. In 1997, he notched up an honours degree in pure math from the University of Western Australia, having become the youngest person ever to study there. Currently, he is a professor at Stanford University. Thus, he can very definitely be considered to be one of the 10 smartest people alive today.
3) Andrew Wiles :
Born in Cambridge in 1953, Wiles officially proved the Fermat’s Last Theorem in 1995, which had previously been unsolved for several centuries. Currently, he holds a Royal Society research professorship at Oxford, and is also a holder of the Shaw Prize.
2) Grigori Perelman :
Born in 1966, this Russian mathematician is well known not only for his brilliance, but also for his eccentricity. In 2002, he famously solved the highly complicated topological problem, the Poincare conjecture. He was offered the Fields Medal in 2006, but declined to receive the award.
1) Stephen Hawking :
Born in 1942, the English astrophysicist has become a cult figure for his brilliance and perseverance in the face of a crippling motor neuron disease. He obtained his Ph.D in 1965, and his 1988 bestseller, A Brief History of Time, is one of the best popular science books ever. He thus deserves a place at the very top of the list of the 10 smartest people alive.
